Toddler groups and vegan foods

Today I took my daughter to a toddler group where they were making chocolate covered apples that they then decorated with various sprinkles, all of which contained numerous E additives as well as eggs. I was then informed that in a couple of weeks time they will be making chocolate covered marzipan sweets for Christmas. Obviously with the information being given to me in advance I will be prepared with vegan alternatives (the recipe I would use is here: http://www.recipesforvegans.co.uk/almondsweets.html) .

I didn't expect them to have vegan food but what surprised me was how unhealthy the food was that they were dealing with. I guess that because we are vegan and also eat very little sugar in our house, healthy food is part of everyday life and I assume (wrongly) that it is the same for everyone.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised as my older daughters school gives them a smartie as a reward for every spelling they get right in their spelling tests (she gets a grape for every correct answer), and the school has a healthy food award so really should be setting a better example to the children. I guess its hardly surprising that the amount of people that are overweight is increasing, as I struggle with my weight and my diet is usually healthy (its just the amount of food that I eat thats the problem!).

Tuesday 6 November 2007

RECIPE: Spinach and Avocado Sandwich

Thanks again to my sister for the recipe for today. The sandwich looks delicious and you can find the recipe here: http://www.recipesforvegans.co.uk/spinachandavocadosandwich.html

ADVERT: Waterproof Memo Boards

Waterproof memo boards are a great tool to have around when you are cooking. You can copy your recipe onto it and use it without worrying about any spills as the boards can be wiped off easily without the writing being removed. They are waterproof too so you could even drop them in your sink of washing up and they would still not rub off.
You can get them in transparent to blend in with any kitchen or in high visibility yellow. They are light weight, tough and durable and a great alternative to a pen and paper. Each board come with a free pencil.

Any suggestions to help a cold

My daughter has a really bad cold. Her temperature has been up and down since Saturday night when it was 102 and it was nearly that high today. Yesterday she seemed fine in the day just coughing a bit with a runny nose but by the end of the day she was hoarse and today I kept her home from school and she had a headache and is coughing now in bed in her sleep.

I don't know what is best for her. There is an argument for dosing her up with nurofen and paracetamol every 2 hours alternately to keep the temperature down. However some people think the body needs to heat up to fight the infection adequately. I have been keeping an eye on it and when it goes over 101 I give her some medication. I know the medicine isn't vegan and I try really hard to be vegan but it isn't possible to do it all the time, especially when it comes to your kids.

I have been giving her cool drinks to soothe her throat and she is eating a bit, but I wish there was more I could do to help. Any suggestions?

NEWS: Scientist breed transparent frogs

NEWS: Scientist breed transparent frogs

The reason for this odd experiment is so that the growing organs can be observed without dissection. The question is, is breeding animals in this unnatural way less cruel than dissecting them, or is doing anything aginst their true nature as cruel as anything else. What do you think?

Take Away Food

Have you ever ordered a take away and realised that they had made a mistake and put meat in the meal? That happened my sister recently who is a vegetarian and it cetainly put her off ordering take aways.

I find that eating at a lot of restaurants is hard work for me, as sometimes I'm not sure they know what vegan is and if they do I'm still not convinced that the foods are truely vegan even though they say they are.

How do you feel? Do you just hope for the best or perhaps turn a blind eye to things that might be suspect?

RECIPE: Roasted Mushrooms with a Cripsy Tomato Topping

Todays recipe is for lovely cripsy mushrooms. These are lovely served with chips as pictured or with a healthy salad.

World Vegan Day

It is world vegan day on the 1st November. I am trying to think of ways to celebrate this. I was wondering whether to have a vegan coffee morning maybe in aid of vegan charity such as Dr Hadwen. I was also wondering whether to run a competition on the website to make people aware of the day.
My daughter also wants to do somethign in school and because it is just after her birthday and in her school the children give out sweets to the class on their birthdays I have been trying to think of something she can do along the same lines.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.

RECIPE: Mash Island

Todays recipe was made up by my daughter. She wanted to make her mashed potato meal look more interesting. I helped her do the cooking and she helped me arrange it on the plate.
