Well the class made the peppermint creams. Abbie made them, and brought them home for her friends. I wonder whether I should be even letting her do that, as she is using non-vegan products. I tried really hard to find an alternative recipe but even the icing sugar had egg white in so I couldn't do that with her. It is so difficult when the school does cooking. You would think they would be encouraging healthy eating!!

Not vegan, but at least vegetarian.
Your sister Rachel, could eat them.
Thats true enough, but you would think schools would be more considerate of dietary needs, especially with so many children having serious allergies these days.
I think it is important that children have some choices and that they feel able to compromise with out criticism - school can be a harsh place. For instance when my vegetarian daughter was small she was allowed sweets with gelatin in - otherwise we were very strict vegetarians - I am now vegan, (I of course did not eat the sweets). When she was slightly older she then decided herself not to eat them anymore and has never done so since - she is now 22. She sometimes wore leather shoes and she cried when she found out about it, but she would literally been shoeless otherwise. She has the same problem today - she cannot find shoes that fit, it can take months to replace a pair that have holes in and endless trying on. She has not got standard shaped feet. She has to buy what she can and sometimes that is leather - design or choice doesn't come into it. She does all she can and cares. That is all anyone can do. If we are too strict with our children they rebel. Remember, sometimes our choices are ours not theirs. Hopefully they will decide the same as us - but it needs to be their choice. Vegans and vegetarians can often be biggoted and judgemental which is not helpful - they are often unfriendly towards one another and forums are filled with awful comments - I don't think that is the way forward.
Hi on the icing sugar it only says may contan trace of, because its made in the same factory where they make 'royal icing sugar' which contains egg. this is just to prevent any legal issues if some one was allergic to egg, it dosnt actually contain ay egg.
